Gidon Nunes Vaz

Gidon began playing the trumpet at age eight after unsuccessfully trying the violin at age five. With the support, encouragement and patience of his parents, Rob and Dina, he started trumpet lessons with a good local teacher, Stanley Lokhin.  Three years later Gidon started participating in the jazz program of Peter Guidi at the Amsterdam music school.  This program gave him the possibility over the years to gain experience playing jazz repertoire and the classic big band repertoire. At age thirteen, Gidon was accepted into the young talent program at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. From this time on his trumpet teacher was Ruud Breuls, an established trumpet player in the Netherlands. Ruud Breuls remained Gidon’s mentor for the next eleven years. At age seventeen Gidon combined his last year of high school with the preliminary year at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. During this year his trumpet teachers were Menno Daams and Jan Oosthof. After this year, Gidon was accepted into the Bachelor (Jazz Trumpet) at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. Four years later (2013) he started the Master (Jazz Trumpet), during this time he went on exchange to Boyer College of Music, Temple University, Philadelphia (USA). During this semester his trumpet teachers were Terell Stafford and John Swana. A memorable part of his experience at the school was being part of the Temple University Jazz Band, directed by Terell Stafford. A highlight during the semester was the performance featuring Jimmy Heath. During the two years of the Master, Gidon has written a thesis on Kenny Dorham. Revealing the unknown life story of this legendary trumpeter and giving clear analysis of Dorham’s playing style. In May 2015, Gidon graduated for his Master. Since that time he's been working as a freelance trumpeter in the Netherlands and abroad.
